Skincare Ingredient Trends for 2023

In recent years, we’ve welcomed more and more skincare fanatics to our ever-growing community (hello tribe!). A laser beam focus on ingredients within skincare has driven ever increasing interest into the science of skincare and truly effective products. Editorial articles and blog posts about hyaluronic acid are everywhere and almost everyone has niacinamide chat! Here at AlumierMD, we’re delighted to have more people to talk skincare with, and we understand the thirst for knowledge about what will help your skin to sing, so read on to be the first to know the hottest skincare ingredient trends for 2023 and where you can find them . . .

Trend 0 – It’s ALL About The Skin Barrier

This overarching trend is close to our hearts, we’ve been preaching about the importance of the skin barrier for YEARS and it’s catching on! A strong skin barrier means skin is healthy, copes well with seasonal changes, and looks smooth, even, and bright. A strong skin barrier also helps skin to respond effectively to any in-clinic treatments. We’re also delighted to report that skinimalism continues to trend, with more and more people looking for effective skincare routines that combine a multitude of powerful ingredients in just 3 to 4 products – happily you’ll find exactly this in our range of . Now, let’s take a deep dive into the ingredients we’ll all be adding to routine this year.

Trend 1 – Barrier Protection with Copper Peptides

Copper peptides have decades of research behind them as a powerful antioxidant for skin. They’re currently having a moment with searches up 81% and we can understand why! As well as protecting skin from damage, copper peptides can help lead to skin that looks younger and plumper. Copper peptides are a great post-treatment ingredient to include in your routine, particularly if you’re booking a chemical peel or other in-clinic treatments.

Where to find it?
Recovery Balm

This incredibly soothing moisturiser has been specially formulated for post-procedure recovery, hence the inclusion of copper peptides. You’ll also find hinokitiol – a natural ingredient sourced from the oils of the western red cedar tree. A powerful yet soothing and ultra-gentle antioxidant, we expect to see this superpower ingredient trending in 2024! For those focused on improving the skin barrier, try our rich and soothing moisturiser HydraCalm loaded with copper peptides, honey, aloe, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.

Trend 2 – Brightening with Fungi – Kojic Acid

Mushrooms are having a moment! In recent years scientists have discovered more and more of their amazing powers, and we’ve been using them in our formulas since we launched. With so many skin benefits we predict mushroom smoothies will be flying out of Joe’s Juice come 2024! Kojic acid comes directly from fungi and helps to brighten skin, let us explain . . .tyrosinase is the enzyme responsible for the pigment production in our skin. If this enzyme is dysregulated, it can cause discolouration and uneven skin tone. No thanks. Luckily, kojic acid can help to dramatically reduce the appearance of discolouration and even skin tone in a big way. Sorry foundation, you’re not needed anymore.

Where to find it:
Intellibright Complex

Our intensive brightening serum enhances results for a more even skin tone. The lightweight formula also contains antioxidant punica granatum AKA pomegranate extract and arbutin, another well-known skin brightening ingredient. You’ll also find Intellibright Complex as part of our Prep & Enhance Collection which – in a study of 24 people – reduced brown spots by an average of 19.91% (1/5th) in just 28 days.

Trend 3 – Serious Skin Activation with Tripeptides – Enter Matrixyltm Synthetm 6

Thanks to an ability to seriously reduce the appearance of even stubborn lines and wrinkles, this little superhero can also do wonders for the hyaluronic acid in your skin, meaning more hydration. This tripeptide is a key player in the fight against premature skin ageing. It works to firm and strengthen skin, and in turn, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This is an ingredient close to our hearts here at AlumierMD, as the founder of cosmetic peptides and indeed MatrixylTM SyntheTM 6 – Dr Karl Linter – is also the director of our scientific committee.

Ultimate Boost Serum

This total skin star is a multi-award-winning serum and our no.1 top selling product for 6 years in a row! A moisturising, featherlight serum that helps to reduce the signs of ageing – such as fine lines and wrinkles, we might occasionally refer to it as a miracle-worker! If you’re looking to reduce lines, this is the one for you.

Trend 4 – Mega Moisturisation – Hello Polyglutamic Acid

Polyglutamic acid also known as PGA draws water into the skin in a similar way to hyaluronic acid. It’s both a peptide and a humectant ingredient and is produced by bacterial fermentation, it’s actually found in a Japanese fermented soybean called Nattō, and it is safe enough to eat! It works to boost skin firmness, hydrate dry and dehydrated skin and to retain moisture for longer. We also rate its ability to plump out fine lines and wrinkles.

Where to find it?
HydraRich

A real multi-tasker – as well as PGA, this smooth, rich moisturiser also includes hyaluronic acid and the tripeptide we mention above – MatrixylTM SyntheTM 6. Since its launch in 2021 this moisturiser has been a global success. As well as deep, lasting hydration, it works to fight the signs of ageing and helps to strengthen the skin barrier with an exclusive pre-biotic blend too.

Trend 5 – Adios Redness, Hola Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil has been traditionally used for centuries to fight inflammation and calm skin. Naturally antibacterial, it is an ideal ingredient for soothing the skin. An antioxidant, rosemary oil helps to protect skin from harmful free radicals that lead to skin damage including redness & premature lines and wrinkles.

Where to find it?
Recovery Balm

Our intensely soothing moisturiser has been specifically formulated for post-procedure recovery. Rich in copper peptides, mentioned above, you’ll also find rosemary oil in this soothing, hydrating formula.

Trend 6 – Another Fun-gi (sorry) Tremella Mushroom, Master Antioxidant Hydrator

Did we mention mushrooms are having a moment? This time we’re talking about tremella mushrooms, also known as silver ear mushrooms. These white lacy fungi look like beautiful white coral. For thousands of years, they have been revered for their youth-activating, beautifying abilities. Tremella mushroom surpasses hyaluronic acid in its water-holding capacity, so it’s a great hydrator. It’s also a powerful antioxidant that works to breakdown free radicals that attack the skin causing lines and wrinkles.

Where to find it?
AluminEye™

The thinnest skin on the body is found around the eye, it’s also an area that we move often to express emotion, hence it needs extra care. Our unique, rich cream feels light and smooth and significantly improves the appearance of dark circles, fine lines, and puffiness. The antioxidant-rich formula (hello tremella mushrooms!) also helps protect from further damage.

Trend 7 – The Lipids or ‘Fats’ that make up 50% of Our Skin Barrier – Ceramides

The outermost layer of our skin is the stratum corneum, we also have the skin barrier which works alongside it to protect our lower skin layers. The entire epidermis is made up of four skin layers which you can imagine like a brick wall – our skin cells are the bricks while the mortar in-between is made up of ceramides and fatty acids. Like a seal, these ceramides help to keep the skin barrier intact by holding in moisture and keeping out harmful elements. Skin that lacks ceramides will become dry and damaged, and may see sensitivity. Ceramides can replenish the skin barrier when applied topically so they are an extremely useful ingredient for building up the skin barrier.

Where to find it?
Calming Collection

Skin showing signs of barrier damage like redness, dry patches, flaky skin, an uncomfortable tight feeling, unusual fine lines or breakouts? Then reach for our calming collection – a set of four products that form an easy, ceramide-packed routine that will help to rebuild the skin barrier.
