Have you noticed that after the cold winter months your skin is more dry than usual? Have you ever wondered why? Today we will have a little look, into the reasons behind this and how you can help to rehydrate your skin now that the weather is becoming milder.
What causes your skin to dehydrate in the winter?
There are many factors that cause your skin to lose hydration in the colder months.
The primary reason is that there is a loss in humidity in the air – when the weather is dry and there is a temperature drop, your skin loses some ability to hold moisture and the water in your skin evaporates more quickly which in turns leave your skin feeling tight and dry and can cause flaking.
We then turn the heating up and increase our skins exposure to dry air which has the same effect on our skin and decreases the moisture in our lips at the same time.
Coming in from the cold and having a long hot soak or long shower aids the natural oils in your skins’ barrier to shed quicker than normal. Warm drinks that contain the highly acidic caffeine, such as coffee and hot chocolate, are naturally dehydrating for your body.
My skin is feels dry – now what?
Firstly, you are not alone! Seeing drying skin on your face when the seasons change is not uncommon.
First step – exfoliate! Exfoliating will restore the skins moisture barrier by removing the dead skin layers revealing the newer vibrant skin. Regular exfoliating will help to repair the skin cell turnover rate helping the skin to look naturally luminous as you head through spring and into the summer.
Secondly, use moisture boosting products suited to your skin. Certain ingredients draw moisture into the dry skin layers whilst others fill the spaces between the skin flakes with oil droplets. Look out for moisture attracting ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, Vitamin E and jojoba oil.
Ultimately your skincare professional will be able to help you find a regime that uses a combination of these ingredients to increase the moisture in the skin, decrease the water loss and restore your skins protective barrier.
